Family Getaway in Riviera Maya

5 Things to Do

Sponsored by FunJet Vacations

South of Cancun is the Riviera Maya, an expanse of white sandy beaches, lush tropical rain forests and natural wonders that stretch along Mexico’s Caribbean coast to the ancient city of Tulum.

Many of Mexico’s best beach all-inclusive resorts are located along this 100-mile stretch. Packed with amenities, varied dining options and one-of-a-kind excursions, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep everyone in your family happy during your vacation.

Here are five family getaway favorites from others who’ve visited Riviera Maya.

Discover New Cultures in Mayan Ruins

Unlike the relatively short history of the US, you can still see vestiges of the Mayans who lived in the Yucatan Peninsula thousands of years ago.

  • See the ruins of the ancient city of Chichen Itza where the massive pyramid El Castillo dominates the site. A full day can easily pass exploring these ruins.
  • Head south to Tulum, a Mayan walled city and port built on cliffs overlooking the sea. You’ll get bot history and beauty in one sweeping view.
  • Visit Coba, a pre-Columbian city nestled in the jungle, and off of many tourists’ radar. At Coba, you can climb the 120 steps to the top of the pyramid and see the sacbes, or raised causeways that brought water to the Mayan residential areas.
South of Cancun is the Riviera Maya, an expanse of white sandy beaches, lush tropical rain forests and natural wonders.

Put Your Swimsuit to Work

Just of the coast of Riviera Maya is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. As the second largest reef in the world, it offers divers a chance to see a diverse brilliantly colored underwater ecosystem. If your family members aren’t certified divers, take a diving class offered through your resort or opt for snorkeling instead.

Many Barcelo resorts offer snorkeling excursions in the waters just offshore or via a chartered boat that takes you a further out to sea. Even near shore you’ll find plenty of colorful tropical fish in the clear blue waters. Farther you out you may also encounter squid, sea turtles or stingrays.

Shop, Shop, Shop

Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue has some of the best shopping in Mexico. You’ll find unique Mexican handicrafts along with international brands like Sephora and H&M.

For those who may not feel like shopping, there’s also plenty of live entertainment option around Parque Fundadores. There’s a kids play area, beach access, papantla dancers and various other entertainers during the day and at night.

Enjoy Watersports

Barceló resorts, like most of the all-inclusives, offer a variety of ways to enjoy every moment of your time near these warm wonderful waters. Rent a jetski, splash down a water slide, take a deep sea fishing cruise or meander along the coast in a kayak.

For a really unique experience, go swimming in a cenote or an underground river that’s common to the Riviera Maya. Want more relaxation? Float down a lazy river, swim up to a bar for a refreshing frozen drink or grab a book and lounge by one of your resort’s pools.

Meet the Local Wildlife

Riviera Maya is packed with unique natural features and opportunities to interact with animal life.  Flamboyant pink flamingos, scenery blending iguanas, and red legged hermit crabs are just part of what you might encounter near the resorts. For even more fun try one of these excursions:

  • Get up close and personal with dolphins at the Dolphinarium at Barceló.
  • Explore the world’s largest natural aquarium at Xel-Ha.
  • See indigenous wildlife at Xcaret, an eco-archaeological park.

With so many varied activities, the Riviera Maya is the perfect spot for a family getaway. From resort activities to exciting excursions, there’s truly something for everyone.
