Alaska Land + Sea Journeys

Sponsored by Holland America Line

Catch your breath as glaciers calve, whales leap and your elegant ship sails by stunning forests, magnificent fjords, historic towns and the vast the untamed wilderness of Alaska. Enjoy fishing, hiking, dogsledding, and endless amazing natural wonders, or simply relax and savor the beauty from your private verandah.

Enjoy the rugged wild beauty of Alaska by sea, but also by sky, train and land for a more intimate Alaskan experience. Some highlights include:

Floatplane Flightseeing

Experience an aerial view of the impressive granite Misty Fjords cliffs jutting out from the sea and feel the excitement of being on a floatplane as it lands on a serene remote mountain lake. If getting close to wildlife is more your style, try a bear watching floatplane excursion outside of Ketchikan, where you can photograph black bears feeding on salmon– from the safety of a Floatplane.

White Pass and Yukon Route Train Ride

Ride aboard a comfortable vintage train that follows the original 1898 Klondike Trail worn into the rocks, serving as a lasting tribute to the thousands of miners who passed this way seeking fortune. This 40-mile round-trip climbs from Skagway to the Summit of White Pass, soaring 2,865 feet. Along the route, enjoy sweeping vistas of imposing mountains, grand gorges and glaciers, tunnels and waterfalls.

Denali National Park and Wilderness Lodge Stay

Venture into the interior of Alaska to one of the state’s most popular attractions: Denali National Park, with its soaring mountains, rolling meadows, dense forests and incredible wildlife, including the chance to see grizzly bears, moose, caribou, lynx, wolves and countless species of birds. The showpiece of the park is 20,320-foot Mt. McKinley, also known as Denali. Stay right outside the park’s borders in a rustic, comfortable lodge for an authentic Alaska experience.

In 2017, Holland America Line celebrated 70 years in Alaska — that’s longer than the area has even been a state! So it goes without saying that they are an expert in the region. They will take you to all the best cities, towns, parks, and glaciers the beautiful state has to offer, whether on a traditional cruise or a Land + Sea cruisetour. Holland America Line offers regular Alaskan cruises and Alaska Land + Sea Journeys in Denali and the Yukon. Cruisetours offer an extended stay in port and include accommodations, other than the ship. On the “Untamed Denali” journey, you will travel to Denali National Park in a glass-domed rail car, called the McKinley Explorer, and stay at the magnificent McKinley Chalet Resort.

Another popular cruisetour is the Yukon and Denali “Green and Gold” tour, where you can discover what life was like during the Klondike Gold Rush and see some of the pristine green forests of Denali National Park.

Holland America Line’s traditional Alaskan cruises offer many opportunities for land exploration, too. With their shore excursions, you can encounter wildlife up-close, learn more about the Native Alaskan culture, and view stunning glaciers from land, sea, rail or sky. Some of the Alaska shore excursions they offer include:

  • Magnificent Misty Fjords by Floatplane — Ketchikan, Alaska
  • Bike and Brew Glacier View — Juneau, Alaska
  • Klondike Rock Climbing and Rappelling — Skagway, Alaska
  • White Pass Summit Scenic Railway — Haines, Alaska
